Class Achievements Include Nine Certifications, as well as Wilderness Medical Rescue, Mass Casualty Drill, and Boston MedFlight Experience
Cambridge, MA (June 2014) – Pro EMS Center for MEDICS is pleased to announce that 21 new paramedics graduated from the training program during a ceremony on Saturday, June 14. Over the course of the program, the paramedic students experienced unique and amazing learning opportunities beyond the classroom, including a wilderness medical rescue trip at Breakheart Reservation, a mass casualty drill with area hospitals, and ride times with Boston MedFlight and the Monmouth Ocean Hospital Service Corporation (MONOC) in New Jersey. These experiences helped the new paramedics develop the cognitive, psychomotor, affective, and leadership skills needed to provide the highest quality pre-hospital care to patients.
“It would be an understatement to say that this class is extremely well-prepared to provide quality pre-hospital care,” said Dr. Todd Thomsen, Medical Director for Pro EMS Center for MEDICS and Emergency Doctor at Mount Auburn Hospital, addressing the graduates and the audience of family and friends. Paramedics graduate with nine certifications, including ACLS, PALS, PEARS, and CEVO. They are also prepared to take the NREMT practical and written examinations; this particular class had a 100% pass rate on the practical examinations and 90% first-time pass rate on the written examinations. The national average first-time pass rate on the written exams is 74%.
After presenting diplomas to all graduates, Program Director James DiClemente recognized the particular achievements of three individual students, including the class valedictorian and the recipients of the Program Director’s Award and the Medical Director’s Award for Clinical Excellence.
Roman Davies was named class valedictorian for achieving the highest grade-point average within the class. Davies was recognized for showing dedication to his studies throughout the program, sometimes arriving several hours before classes began in order to study and ask questions to further his understanding of the material.
Edward Moussouris received the Program Director’s Award, which recognizes a student’s overall dedication, integrity, teamwork, diplomacy, and quality patient interactions.
Michael Killeen was presented with the Award for Clinical Excellence for the many positive commendations he received from preceptors during his field and clinical internships. Killeen was one of several paramedic students who completed their field internships with the Monmouth Ocean Hospital Service Corporation (MONOC), a busy EMS service in northern New Jersey with whom Center for MEDICS has partnered for more than five years.
Professional Ambulance (Pro EMS) CEO Bill Mergendahl began the ceremony by acknowledging the hard work and great team effort that brought everyone to this event. “The instructors, directors, and students worked together with great energy and enthusiasm,” said Mergendahl, “but the most important element was the support from the families and friends who are in the audience tonight.”
